Traditionally set in the 1780s, this production of the intense French Romantic piece by Jules Massenet will be set among the turmoil of post-WWII Europe. In this traumatised world, where class structures were recalibrating and appearances were everything, Werther and Charlotte struggle with obsession, depression, jealousy and love.
The piece will be performed in the original French with English surtitles at the Abbotsford Masonic Hall, 141 Gipps Street, Abbotsford, for six performances.
Following the success of their highly-acclaimed debut production of Carmen in 2016, BK Opera are hotly anticipating the imminent opening of their second production, Werther, on April 26th. As they continue their mission to create dark and intimate, stripped-back interpretations of well-known operas and provide opportunities for emerging young singers, BK Opera are presenting a unique take on the classic piece, directed by Kate Millett and conducted by James Penn.
